In depth with Apple's Snow Leopard Server

I’ve worked with various versions of Apple’s Mac OS X Server for nearly a decade now. Each new release has brought major advances to the company’s server software in terms of overall features, performance and ease of administration. The most recent iteration, version 10.6—a.k.a. Snow Leopard Server — is no exception.

iPhoto 8.1.1 fixes Faces bug

On Tuesday, Apple released a minor update to its iPhoto ’09 digital photography software. The iPhoto 8.1.1. update deals with face-recognition performance and accuracy (to fix a problem introduced with the 8.1 update), book ordering, and iPod touch support. For iPhoto’s Faces feature, the update resolves an issue that could result in slow performance when displaying suggested matching faces, as well as a problem with some faces being matched incorrectly.

Review: MacScan 2.7: Clean and simple utility offers spyware protection

Call it insurance for your Mac: MacScan 2.7 scans your hard drive for spyware, Trojan horses, keyloggers, scareware and remote administration programs that may trip up your system. It can also be set to automatically clean up after your Web browsing binges, deleting blacklisted cookies, history, temporary cache files and downloaded files lists. The interface is clean and simple, and the manual clearly explains why you might want to use the various options.

Review: Pentax K-M/K2000 beginner-friendly DSLR

Priced affordably with both an 18mm to 55mm and 50mm to 200mm kit lenses, Pentax’s 10.2-megapixel K2000 (sold in Australia as the KM) may tempt quite a few people to jump into the digital SLR pool. Though the supposed niche for the KM consists of consumers new to the DSLR market, the camera’s compatibility with previously issued lenses could increase the KM’s appeal to Pentax enthusiasts of all stripes.

Review: The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 4

For syncing Macs with Windows Mobile smartphones, The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile from Mark/Space has been the top solution. Version 4 adds support for new types of data syncing and the ability to move phone logs and SMS messages to your Mac. But it still lacks e-mail syncing, something you can find in SyncMate Expert, Eltima Software’s competing product.

Review: Curio Professional 6: A place for everything

If Zengobi’s Curio Professional 6.2 had a television commercial, I suspect it would be in the style of the late baseball legend Billy Mays. Curio is a single application for note taking, outlining, mind mapping, project management, charting, drawing, presenting, and more. Zengobi describes Curio as a brainstorming and project management application for creative types and visual thinkers. Curio executes most of its features with aplomb, but with so many of them Curio puts up a very busy interface.

Review: 27-inch Core i5 iMac (with Core i7 option): Fastest Mac ever

When Apple announced new iMacs last month, it included a major step forward amid the subtle-but-welcome refinements in most of the models: the first ever iMac to offer a quad-core processor. The new high-end 27-inch iMacs are the first to use Intel’s Core i5 and Core i7 quad-core processors, and they were not available at the time of the announcement. But finally, the wait is over, and the Core i5 and Core i7 27-inch iMacs have arrived—and let me tell you, it was worth the wait.

Review: Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server

Ever since the Mac mini was first released, people have been using Apple’s diminutive Mac desktop as a server. At 16.5cm square and 5cm high, it bears just the sort of compact computing power you want to stick in a closet or under a desk and use as an all-purpose receptacle for all your stuff.

Review: Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning doesn’t give you a pony to ride. When you first enter the game, you won’t be greeted by a smiling, reassuring Elven woman who will tell you that you are the chosen one. You won’t get a chance to frolic in the meadows of your pristine home, allowed to playfully learn to fight.
