To photographers of a certain generation, a filter is an optical element that you screw on to the end of your lens; it alters the light to achieve some kind of effect. To the digital photographer, a filter is usually a plug-in that you add to your image editor. It’s very fitting, then, that Tiffen, one of the leading manufacturers of lens filters, has released a package of plug-in filters that simulate the effects of their real-world lens filters; and it's very exciting that Tiffen has done such a good job in producing a plug-in collection that’s useful and performs well.

Image editing software like Photoshop allows you to heavily alter an image in incredibly realistic ways. One of the most common ways an image is altered is to improve the look of skin. Glance over a magazine rack and you’ll see a vast gallery of faces that, whether you can tell or not, have been heavily manipulated.

If you’re someone who started out with Adobe Illustrator back when it was called Illustrator 88, then you’ve seen lots of changes over 20 years. Illustrator is one of a handful of powerful vector drawing products aimed at graphic artists and illustrators, and it’s always been elegant and production-ready. Even if Adobe has sometimes been slow to add cool new features, you could always count on Illustrator’s stability and its colour and output engines to perform well in a professional production environment.

This morning Apple released a new version of its iPhone SDK for developers. iPhone SDK beta 2 includes Interface Builder, a component of Apple’s development tools that lets developers create the interface for their applications. That seems to be the only major change in the latest build, according to the SDK’s read me, which continues to list some known issues. Apple says “this second beta is known to be incompatible with installation folders other than the default /Developer.” Given the importance of UI on the Mac, Interface Builder is a pretty critical tool in the development process, and some developers had chosen to hold off on their efforts until the SDK was revised. Apple unveiled the iPhone SDK at a special event earlier this month, allowing developers to begin building applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. Several high-profile companies have already jumped onboard, demoing their applications at the event. Highlighting the demos was AOL with a native AIM client; other applications from Electronic Arts, Salesforce.com, and Apple were also shown.
